TEATRO

Non è possibile dar conto delle numerose rappresentazioni teatrali delle avventure di SH: ricordiamo solo quelle con due dei più grandi interpreti di SH: William Gillette e nel 1988 il bravissimo Jeremy Brett, con Edward Hardwicke nel ruolo di Watson (The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, scritto e diretto da Jeremy Paul). Al grande attore e drammaturgo statunitense, che agli inizi del '900 portò sulle scene il dramma teatrale Sherlock Holmes, scritto in collaborazione con lo stesso Doyle, vanno rivolti alcuni aspri rimproveri: fu lui a inventare la celebre frase "Elementare, Watson!", che in realtà SH non pronunciò mai. E fu sempre Gillette a indossare quel deplorevole berretto da cacciatore, il deerstalker (peraltro già disegnato da Sidney Paget), divenuto poi, purtroppo, una sorta di marchio. E, infine, Gillette impersonò SH fumando (quasi) sempre la calabash, la pipa ricurva con il fornello di schiuma, il corpo in zucca e il bocchino in ambra, di cui non vi è traccia nei libri di Doyle, dato che SH fumava vari tipi di pipe, sigari e sigarette.
